ACCIDENT PREVENTION SIGNS & LABELS

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z535) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA 29 CFR§ 1910.145) provide specifications, design, application, and use of header signs. These signs are intended to indicate potential, type, and degree of the hazard that may lead to accidental injury or property damage. They define specific hazards by conveying a clear and rapidly understood message.

ACCIDENT PREVENTION SIGN HEADERS

The OSHArecognized headers are the traditional styles, while the recent ANSI specified headers are becoming a recognized style for a new generation of signs.
Danger — Indicates an imminently hazardous situation which, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury. This signal word is to be limited to the most extreme situations. The signal word Danger should not be used for property damage hazards unless personal injury risk appropriate to the level is also involved.
Warning — Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury. This signal word should not be used for property damage hazards unless personal injury risk appropriate to this level is also involved.
Caution — Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, may result in minor or moderate injury. It may also be used to alert against unsafe practices that may cause property damage.
Notice — Indicates a statement of company policy directly or indirectly related to the safety of personnel or protection of property. This signal word should not be associated directly with a hazard or hazardous situation.
Safety First, Think, Emergency — Indicates general instructions relative to safe work practices, remind of proper safety procedures, and indicate the location of safety equipment.

Pressure Sensitive Vinyl— (EV)
Flexible 4-mil thick vinyl has self-adhesive back. Strong, permanent acrylic adhesive with peel-off liner adheres to smooth, curved, and irregular surfaces. Legend is screen-printed onto the matte surface. Vinyl is economical, for light-duty applications, yet moisture resistant, and has outdoor durability 2 to 4 years. Service temperature is -40° to 176° F.

Polyethylene Plastic — (PTH)
Semi-flexible plastic is economical and appropriate for medium-duty use — ideal for indoor and sheltered outdoor environments. The .055" thick polyethylene sign is screen-printed onto the surface. Has enough flex to mount on slight curved areas, such as pipes, poles, and containers. Service temperature range is -112° to 168° F. Has rounded corners with 3/16" mounting holes.

Perma Bond Aluminum — (PBA)
Aluminum provides the strength of metal, yet does not rust. It has superior abrasion and chemical resistance. Vinyl sign is permanently bonded to a rigid .040" aluminum backing, then further protected by 1-mil high-gloss polyester over-laminate film. Withstands splashes and washdowns, as well as outdoor environmental conditions. While the service temperature range for the bonded vinyl is -40° to 176° F, aluminum itself withstands extreme temperature ranges. Has rounded corners with 3/16" mounting holes.

CONTENT

Header
A specific or “signal” word (or words) to designate a degree or level of safety alerting, always located in the uppermost portion of the sign. Intended to capture and direct one’s attention to the potential hazardous situation.

Legend
The specific short message conveys the need to pay attention to a potential hazard or hazards, or take a necessary action to avoid such hazard(s).

Symbol
Pictorials are graphic representations to clearly convey a specific alerting message compatible with and supplemental to the legend message. Universal in design, many are standardized in ANSI Z535.3, to be easily understood.
