W-Beam guardrail has been used for over 50 years. It derives its name from the cross-sectional shape. Fabricated using roll form method, it is hot-dipped galvanized for long term use in the roadside environment. W-Beam is used to protect vehicle occupants from severe injuries from impacts with roadside hazards, separate traffic traveling in opposite directions, and prevent vehicles from going over steep slopes. When an errant vehicle leaves the roadway and impacts a run of properly installed and anchored guardrail at an angle, the vehicle is guided away from the hazard by the “ribbon-effect” of the continuous guardrail run.
